Executive Director William Morris Announces New Leadership Post
From the Desk of the Executive Director:
“It is my intention to create a camp that will allow individuals with disabilities to enjoy and make everlasting memories while being treated fairly, humanely, and respected as human beings by our summer staff. To accomplish this, I am creating a new position for the camp leadership team to complement the COO and Camp Director positions. The purpose of this memorandum is to outline the duties and responsibilities of the new Assistant Executive Director (AED), and who will receive it, since I have already decided who will be appointed to this position.”
POSITION SUMMARY:
Camp Mauritius’ Assistant Executive Director works with the camp’s senior leadership team to create an engaging environment for everyone regardless of their disability, origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious preference, or otherwise. Primary responsibilities include recruiting, training, creating staff codes of conduct and maintaining camper health and safety. Supervisory and coordination of all personnel activities in Camp Mauritius are the duties of the Assistant Executive Director. These duties include overseeing all staff as assigned by the Executive Director and/or the COO (e.g., camp director, health director, program director, camper leaders, volunteers, cabin staffers, and activities directors). The Assistant Executive Director reports directly to the Executive Director and the Chief Operating Officer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
SCHEDULING:
- Develops activity schedules in conjunction with the camp’s program team.
- Ensures adequate staffing of all filled positions at the camp.
- Ensures work schedule is posted and that changes in said schedules are communicated to all personnel.
- Coordinates with the camp Health Director to ensure adequate staffing for said term for nurse coverage and medication passes in the event of illness or other circumstances that result in nurses being unavailable to provide this care.
- Ensures call schedule is clearly communicated to all who need to know. Keep camp nursing staff on call updated and informed concerning options for filling on-call shifts.
- Adjusts schedules as needed for scheduled time off. Use all resources available to fill gaps or holes in schedules. Consults with COO when encountering barriers to filling gaps or holes.
- Coordinates with the Health Director to develop on-call schedules for all summer terms. Adjusts as needed.
LEADERSHIP:
- Supervises the Camp Director and their leadership teams.
- Supervises the Health Director and their Health Services team.
- Coordinates all functions in the absence of the Executive Director and the COO.
- Directs all camp operations as assigned by the Executive Director and the COO.
- Ensures senior cabin leaders and camp counselors are following all instructions left by the parent/guardian regarding camper health and safety, as well as behavioral issues that may arise with each camper.
- Conduct inspections of all cabins before campers arrived the week before camp starts.
- Conduct leadership training two weeks before camp starts.
- Allows Senior Cabin Leaders and their teams to direct the affairs of the cabins with assistance from the Cabin Staff Advisors and Camp Counselors.
- Coordinates Senior Cabin Leaders and their teams’ schedules and coaches them on leadership training classes, assists other counselors and ensures that they attend staff meetings as required.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
- Prepares policies and procedures with consultation from the leadership team.
- Oversees all camp policy violations and shall keep the Executive Director apprised of all violations by campers and/or staff.
- Shall issue disciplinary actions as needed to camper and staff alike if they are in direct violation of camp policies.
- Shall protect and promote camper’s rights and responsibilities.
- Shall update policies as needed as instructed by the Executive Director and the COO.
- Coordinates with the Executive Director, the COO, and the Health Director on health policies and procedures and communicates all changes to the Camp Director.
The individual who will assume the AED’s responsibilities is Brenann Shelton, currently serving at The Morris Youth Foundation as the Chief of Staff for the Executive Office of the President. He has been behind the scenes assisting me with floors of office buildings and land developments for when we do get the camp up and running.
