FAQs: (2023)

Q: What Makes Camp Mauritius Unique?

A: First and foremost, we are led by an individual with a disability! Second, we do not represent a single religion or faith. Our mission is to ensure the campers are safe, having a good time, and building memories with their friends. We celebrate and elevate the campers’ voices by motivating them to take on new life challenges and learn new skills.

Q: Can the Campers Become Leaders?

A: Yes they can! The more experienced campers may apply for the positions of Senior Cabin Leader (SCL) or Cabin Leader (CL). They must apply for the positions they seek and provide three letters of recommendation from someone other than family members. They can also become members of an advisory board that governs the entire camp, much like a Board of Directors, but with some constraints on their authority.

These campers are in a unique position since they get to experience not just being a camper but also the administrative side of things. Allowing our campers some autonomy in running their cabins is an excellent illustration of this experience. The senior cabin leader is the campers’ chief resident, responsible for their assigned cabin, and will share those responsibilities with the senior counselors.

Q: How are Applicants Chosen if there isn’t an Application Process?

A: The Staff Director and the leadership team select the candidates. An application procedure will be launched soon. We’re currently ironing out some glitches and small nuances in terms of filling senior leadership roles. We want qualified individuals who have prior programming expertise and can work well with others.

Q: Who Oversees the Camp?

A: The camp’s founder and executive director is William Morris. The camp is sponsored by The Morris Youth Foundation and is directly overseen by him. He is hands-on and believes in giving opportunities to people in need. His visionary leadership is fundamental for the camp’s continuing success.

Q: Can I send my child to your camp?

No. At this time, we are not open. That announcement will be made in the near future.
